Final Round – Fleet Captain Paul Scott (Orion)

See Paul’s article in the latest Captain’s Log for a summary of this battle.  Even though I lost, I felt pretty good about the way the game went...until the plane ride home.  There, out of the blue, I realized that I had missed a potential game breaking move at the end of impulse 1 of Turn 2.  At range 5, with 3 of Paul’s F-torps on the board (2 of them likely real) and only my fakes out, I could have heted away on impulse 2, out run the torps, and then come back for the kill.  It would have been very hard for Paul at that point to recover and would likely force him to cloak (not a great thing in this matchup, especially down several warp boxes and rearming torps).  I would have had a very big advantage, which I gained by having outmaneuvered Paul on Turn 1.  Yet I did not see that possible move at the time.  Neither did Paul.

All in all, it was a great tournament.  Although I lost in another heartbreaker in the finals for the second year in a row, I had a lot of fun, particularly just hanging out with the other SFBers.  I look forward to making it back out to Origins sometime in the next few years for another try.
